Gay Urban Youth Zone (GUYZ)
The goal of the GUYZ Project is to increase knowledge and awareness about HIV, Hepatitis C (HCV) and sexually transmitted infections (STI) among young gay men and service providers in the St. John's area.
Using a community development approach, GUYZ aims to empower gay youth in St. John's to take control over issues that affect their health. Members of the gay youth community in St. John's will identify their own health issues through a needs assessment. Then, using a peer education model, they will develop action oriented solutions to address these issues.
Many educational and health initiatives aimed at this population were developed without the input and experience of gay youth and ultimately may not have the intended impact. GUYZ aims to enable young gay men to mobilize as a community, develop and strengthen their knowledge and to better understand and actively address their own health needs. An advisory committee has been established for the GUYZ Project which will help guide the implementation of the project.
